The Artist
Roland Lebrun
Roland Lebrun works between the California coast and the forests of Oregon, making high-fire stoneware that carries the weight and color of both landscapes. His practice is rooted in reduction firing — a process that demands patience, surrender, and a willingness to let the kiln have the final word.
Each piece begins with hand-building or wheel-throwing, then passes through weeks of carving, texturing, and glaze application before entering the fire. The cobalt blues that define his work are not painted on — they emerge from the chemistry of glaze and flame, unpredictable and unrepeatable.
His work has been exhibited in galleries across the Pacific Coast. Every piece leaves the studio signed, documented, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

The Practice
"The fire decides. I only prepare."
Reduction firing is not a controlled process. The kiln is sealed, oxygen is starved, and the flame begins pulling oxygen from the glaze itself. Cobalt turns from gray powder to deep Pacific blue. Iron shifts from rust to black. The potter's job is to understand the chemistry well enough to set the conditions — and then let go.
Roland has been working this way for over two decades. The results are never identical. That is the point.
