Roland Lebrun
Roland Lebrun has spent more than two decades making high-fire stoneware along the Pacific Coast — first in Northern California, now splitting his time between a coastal studio in California and a forest workshop in Oregon. His practice is rooted in progressive experimentation: a constant search for new forms, new surfaces, new conversations between clay and fire.
Roland does not simply use kilns — he builds them. His most significant firings happen in large-scale wood kilns constructed with the community, structures that take weeks to assemble and days to fire. This communal dimension is inseparable from the work itself. The kiln is not a machine. It is a gathering.
Each piece carries the ocean in it — the place where Pacific blue meets the warm ochre of coastal rock, where salt air meets ancient earth. His work is ceramic and sculptural, with sculptural pieces made from ceramic, bronze, and aluminum. Every piece leaves the studio signed, documented, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

The Practice
"The fire decides. I only prepare."
Reduction firing is not a controlled process. The kiln is sealed, oxygen is starved, and the flame begins pulling oxygen from the glaze itself. Cobalt turns from gray powder to deep Pacific blue. Iron shifts from rust to black. The potter's job is to understand the chemistry well enough to set the conditions — and then let go.
Roland has been working this way for over two decades. The results are never identical. That is the point.
